Who is responsible

Email updates

Email updates are not currently open for signup. Nothing on this site collects an email address today. The rest of this section describes how it will work when signup opens.

If you subscribe, your email address is stored so the writing can be sent to you, and a confirmation email is sent to the address you entered. Your subscription only becomes active once you confirm it from that email — an unconfirmed address is never sent anything else.

Alongside your address, the page you subscribed from is recorded as context. No tracking profile, advertising identifier or purchased data is attached to it.

Unsubscribing

Every email carries a one-click unsubscribe link and header. Unsubscribing takes effect immediately and needs no reply, login or explanation. After you unsubscribe, a one-way cryptographic fingerprint of your address is kept so the list can honour your opt-out without keeping your address on file.

Confirmation and unsubscribe links carry a single-purpose, random code and nothing readable about you. Opening one of those pages changes nothing on its own — the change only happens when you press the button, so a link scanner or preview cannot subscribe or unsubscribe you by accident. Confirmation links stay valid for 72 hours; the unsubscribe link in a message keeps working, and pressing it more than once is harmless. If you ever unsubscribe and later sign up again, the earlier unsubscribe links stop working at the moment you confirm.

An opt-out recorded because a message bounced, was reported as spam, or was set by us can never be undone by clicking a confirmation link. Those are only changed by emailing us directly.

Analytics

This site uses Google Analytics to understand which writing is read, in aggregate. It records page views and a small number of interactions, such as opening an article's main visual. It is not used to identify individual readers, and analytics data is never joined to an email address.

Sharing and retention

Your email address is never sold, rented or shared for anyone else's marketing. It is handled only by the infrastructure needed to store the list and deliver the email. Addresses are kept while the subscription is active, and removed on request.

Your choices

You can ask at any time what is held about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted, by emailing emailme@elliotmarshall.com. Deletion requests are honoured in full, except for the opt-out fingerprint described above, which exists to keep you off the list.
